Gift Guide

Monday, December 10, 2012

So for the super organized start-Christmas-shopping-black-Friday-1-year-in-advance shoppers, this gift guide is coming way late (maybe you can get a jump on next year?) As for me, I'm more apt to start shopping a couple weeks in advance and here are some fun picks that I found. Most of these items are around $20-25 and hopefully might be the perfect something for that hard-to-buy person on your list :)

For the man in your life:
1. Engraved ipod shuffle
Perfect for working out at the gym with it's little clip (so much less bulky than his iPhone) and super sweet with an engraved message from you (free when you order on the Apple site!)
**1 and 2 are my gifts to my husband this year :)
2. Flannel shirt jac
Because plaid flannel is back. And it looks so manly.
3. J. Crew back-up iphone battery
So you never lose touch. Great for travel!

For dad:
4. J. Crew Factory Stripe Sweater
He'll be stylin' in this cotton-cashmere blend for $24.50
5. Celestial coasters
For his cold one.

For bro:
6. No spill travel mug
He won't know how he lived without it.
7. woodsy iphone case
Because it's so cool.

For gramps:
8. Smartwool socks
We all love them.
 9. big coffee mug
For his morning cup of joe.

For mom:
1. Aveda tea
Best.tea.ever (take my word on it)
2. the perfect pink sweater
She'll wear it with everything.

For the sis:
3. Stripe merino scarf
The perfect warm winter scarf, in lots of fun colors.
4. legwarmers
She'll love them.

For grandma:
5. Henri Bendel lavendar candle
This fancy candle takes the award for best lavendar scent.
6. Anthropologie chalkboard spice jars
Because they're so cute. And she could use them for so many things.

For your best friend:
7. J. Crew Factory Bracelet or 8. collar necklace
$15-$30 and so pretty.
9. fun scarf
Because you'd love it for yourself.

Miscellaneus

For the medical geek in your family: thump thump poster

For your free-spirited cousin/friend/sibling: travel stub diary

What I wore Sunday parte tres...

Sunday, December 9, 2012

I broke from the norm this week and pulled out my trusty black crops instead of my usual skirt. It's a blustery, snowy day out and black pants, wool socks, and boots sounded a lot cozier than a skirt and tights.

Trying to study for the obstetrics and gynecology shelf exam that I have Friday (prayers please!), but it's tough with Christmas in the air and our Costa Rica honeymoon only a week away...

Planning to post a Gift Guide tomorrow (and sharing what I found for my hubby this year), so come take a look if you still have a few people in your life to shop for and are looking for something fun and reasonably priced :)

Chambray: J. Crew
Sweater: J. Crew
Black ankle pants: Gap
Boots (old)

I realized that this is sort of a more 'winterized' version of my Thanksgiving Day attire: same chambray + sweater and fav pants but with boots and a wool-ish scarf (that feels quite Christmas-y).

Joining What I Wore Sunday again (love Sundays). Excited to see what everyone wore!

7 Quick Takes

Friday, December 7, 2012

1. I'm still working on making my way through our wedding photos that we got last week (over 2000) but kind of love this one. Epic chair-lifting dance courtesy of my Jewish relatives.

2. This was the last official week of my OB-GYN rotation. I was in the office Monday through Thursday and I loved so much of it: ultrasounding baby heart rates, measuring fundal heights, seeing the look on new parent's faces when they saw their baby for the first time on ultrasound, etc. I'm sad it's over.

3. Today was also my last day in the OR assisting with gynecological surgeries. I can't say I'm too sad about it being over since I won't miss living in constant fear of dropping an instrument or un-sterilizing myself or having to pee during a 5 hour surgery. Unfortunately I have 3 months of General and Senior Surgery to look forward too. Oh joy.

Last time I will wear these stylin' booties until surgery rotation this spring

4. I made pot roast for the first time this week (no, it was not worthy of a picture). I was pretty proud of my cooking endeavor until my hubby informed me that it just didn't taste quite right (and he's no complainer, especially when it comes to food). Neither one of us can cook, and it's starting to take an unfortunate toll on my poor guy (apparently he has lost 10 pounds in the last month).

5. Isn't this plaid shirt perfection? I've been on the hunt for the perfect flannel shirt ever since I saw this on Pinterest. It's so funny to me that they're back in style since the last time I wore a plaid flannel shirt was as a freshman in high school (yes I thought I was pretty cool wearing it with my wide leg jeans and glitter airwalks).

6. And another Pinterest find: this amazing pink lake in Australia (that I thought was so amazing I wrote a whole post about it). My life would just not be the same without Pinterest.

7. Did everyone hear that Princess Kate is pregnant? Ok I was probably one of the last to find out (med school and keeping up with pop culture news do not mix) but I am pretty excited for the new little royal. And can you believe this picture of Kate just leaving the hospital? She looks perfect as always (totally my fashion idol).

Happy weekend (I'll be studying for my OB-GYN shelf exam)

Mauve blush and grey stripes

Thursday, December 6, 2012

We were advised before starting rotations in July to start adding to our professional wardrobe, which for me was practically nonexistent after my brief time as an ER nurse (yay scrubs!) and extensive time as a student. I owned a couple clearance rack J. Crew Factory cotton pencil skirts then, and since starting rotations have added two wool double serge pencil skirts. I loved this one in mauve blush and watched it until it went on sale + 30% more off, which fortunately happened while my size was still available.

I think that blush pink works well as a neutral, and the tan tones of this skirt make it work with different color schemes. It has a tweedy look, which adds some dimension to the pastel.

I always get one size up in J. Crew pencil skirts for comfort and drape...The fabric is a light wool, which is perfect for winter but will also work well into spring.

Sorry for the lighting in the pictures; I never seem to get home from the hospital before it's dark out.

Yes my scarf matches my rug, haha. I'm kind of a stripes fanatic and newly obsessed with grey.

I purchased this merino stripe scarf with a couple Christmas gifts I ordered with the last 30% off sale. It was a bit more expensive ($35 on sale) than my last few scarves but I think it's worth it because of the nice, soft, warm merino wool. I couldn't resist the stripes, and cream and pale grey is so versatile. This would make a great Christmas gift.

I really loved this outfit and got lots of compliments on it today, especially the skirt (which I can't wait to wear again!)

Mauve blush pencil: J. Crew
Stripe merino scarf: J. Crew
Grey sweater: J. Crew Factory (I've been wearing this about three times a week)
Booties: Clarks (my new work staple, practical but still cute)

Coral + pink

Wednesday, December 5, 2012

Coral seems to make any day a little brighter! I'm in the OB-GYN office this week for my last week on the rotation which means fun outfits instead of hospital scrubs. I couldn't decide what to wear this morning (yes, scrubs make things too easy), so I opted for comfort and color, pairing this uber soft cashmere blend sweater with my trusty denim pencil skirt. This scarf was a unique find from Anthropologie, I was drawn to its watercolor splashes of coral and pink along with its substantialness (the bigger the better when it comes to scarves!)

A pink lake...

Tuesday, December 4, 2012

Via Pinterest

Sometimes you can find random amazing-ness on Pinterest, like this pink lake. It's one of the 'wonders of Australia' and kind of a mystery, but apparently the high salt and algae content may be what makes it pink (you can read a little about it here). Pink will forever be my favorite color and so tonight I'll be dreaming about this beautiful place in Australia (and probably about my pager going off, but hopefully about the pink lake).

Sunday stripes...

Sunday, December 2, 2012

My pager went off this morning again, and I finished my last delivery for my obstetrics rotation. Definitely bittersweet; I won't miss my pager going off randomly at all hours, but I will 100% miss delivering babies. I can't imagine any of the rotations I have left being better...and maybe that tells me something about choosing my residency :)

What I wore Sunday #2: Stripes + neutrals + obligatory top knot and pleather boots.

Linking up with Fine Linen and Purple.
Happy Sunday!

Skirt: Old Navy
Sweater: J. Crew Factory (40% off right now)
Scarf: Old Navy
Boots: Famous Footwear
