Friday Quick Takes

Joining Jen for the weekly round of Quick Takes.

1. If you've been following any of my style posts, you know that I'm obsessed lately with my Hunter boots (evidence here, here, and here), but my littlest sister Maria (age 10) is less than impressed with them. She refers to them as my "duck boots" and when she came over this week, she asked me "So are those boots really in style?" When I assured her that they are (and have been forever and will be forever), she rolled her eyes and sighed "What is this world coming to?"

She also thinks that they look just like Stephen's firefighter boots:

2. I am shocked x 1 million to say this, but I am kind of liking my surgery rotation. Don't get me wrong, it's a love/hate relationship (definitely hate the 5 a.m. rounding) but there is something about getting to see your patients after you've "fixed" them in the O.R. And seeing the inside of the human body in surgery is amazing (we will see if I am saying the same thing after 16 hours in surgery today...my attending physician told me to make sure that I eat my wheaties this morning).

3.  I have 563 recipes on my "Foodie" board on Pinterest, of which I have made approximately 3. One of the three was this week: these Oven Tacos. I highly recommend them (easy and delish).

4. The courage of this mom truly inspired me this week. (Thanks goes to my sister Ingrid for sharing her story with me).

5. And on a more lighthearted note, this is true passion, people. (Credit goes to my sis Ilsa for this. I'm glad that my sisters send me cool You Tube videos that I would never find on my own).

6. My surgery call weekend is now switched from this weekend to next, so instead of waiting for my pager to go off and scrubbing in on a gazillion surgeries, I will hopefully be wearing this striped dress for a weekend date night with the hubs:

7. Is anyone else counting down the hours until the Bachelor finale on Monday? I think that I will have a small heart attack if I don't get done in surgery by 8 p.m. that night (priorities, I know).

Also joining Alyssa today for my first round of Coffee Date. So that I can play by the rules, I'm adding my 5 fav beauty products to the round-up (these quick takes just keep getting randomer and randomer):

Full post to come later :)

Happy, happy weekend!

  1. I remember my husband (now an OB/GYN) also being crazy surprised at his love of his surgery rotation. It kind of finally pushed him over the edge towards OB and away from family practice and/or peds (what he went into med school convinced he was going to become). OB/GYN is kind of the best of both worlds for him - still able to operate, but yet still primary care. Unfortunately, it still has the same crappy hours as surgery!

Good luck with your cases today!

    1. Thanks!

I think that I might be like your husband and this rotation might confirm my decision to do OB-GYN :) It really does seem to be the best of both worlds!

  2. I read that story about the surrogate and her baby this week, too, and was so amazed by her fortitude. I hadn't known there were any videos out there, though--so glad you shared this one! Have a good weekend, Erika!

  4. Surely you're mistaking surgery with some other fun, nice, and enjoyable rotation? ;-)

Love that dress! I hope you get to wear it this weekend too!

    1. Katie, I was thinking the same thing!!! ;) Well, someone has to be a surgeon!

Oh boots... I am in need of a new pair. Still trolling the market, and Hunter may be it!

    2. Haha! I know, I feel so weird because it shouldn't be one bit enjoyable and even with the tortures, I am kind of enjoying it! Thinking this may be my confirmation to do OB-GYN...

Thanks! I think Stephen and I are going out tonight, so I will get to wear it, yay!

Julie, I highly recommend the Hunters, so practical and stylish.

  6. When you say, "surgical rotation," I can't help but think of Grey's Anatomy. So tell me, do real life doctors love Grey's? Or is it one of those, "Oh, please, that's so fake" kind of things? Just curious. =)

By the way, you are adorable in your striped dress!

    1. Thanks so much!

I think a lot of docs hate Grey's because they do misrepresent things, but I kind of like it :) I will say that I am less into the show now that I'm in medical school (which might be a time thing), but I do still watch it occasionally and enjoy it. And I won't lie that I have thought of the show while I've been in surgery, hahaha.

  8. I'm here via 7 Quick Takes...have to comment on the video about the woman who kept the beautiful baby. I'm in tears. My baby just had his 4 surgery, his palate was just closed this past week. Thank you for sharing the video.
